The Elevator
When I got in the elevator at my office this morning, I was greeted by several flattened cardboard boxes and a few plastic bags of random food items. I learned a few moments later that a homeless woman had been sleeping the elevator at night and had left only moments before. Even though this setup is likely to end soon once the owners of the building decide how to handle it, the sight of this small encampment saddened me. Even Southern California nights are cold, and this woman needed to be inside. I do not know her, but I wonder who she is and how she got to the point…

Perfect Attendance Awards
I think these student awards that are given out at the end of the school year are absurd. They are not based on academics, only that the student’s physical body is present in a seat. Of course, I am in no way trying to diminish the achievements of students who were not attacked by the various germs, illnesses and bacteria that float around school campuses waiting for a vulnerable host. Perhaps schools can find another way to recognize students instead of a school-wide award that seems only to highlight the students who either went to school sick or were lucky enough not to get sick in the first place. MS, mood swings, and waterproof mascara. Waterproof mascara has become my valuable ally against MS mood swings. When my eyes begin to water out of anger or frustration, waterproof mascara keeps me from looking like a raccoon. Wearing it allows for a quicker recovery when life with MS becomes overwhelming. The littlest things can irritate me now. Last week, just the sight of our cluttered kitchen table drove me over the edge. My husband and son ran for cover as I hurled random papers and half-filled water bottles into the trash.
